New England has the longest recorded history of earthquake activity in the United States. Because of the high population density and because the historical data are likely to be more complete in the Southern New England, we have examined the statistics of the earthquake data and then constructed recurrence relations in an attempt to estimate the mean return period as a function of earthquake size.
