Abstract

The earthquake sequence that began in January, 1972 at Ancona, Italy is a typical swarm, with maximum magnitudes of 4.4 – 4.9. Peaks of activity occured on February 4 – 6 and June 14 – 18. The widespread superficial damage to buildings and the long duration of the activity caused severe anxiety among the population, with serious consequences for the community, beyond the direct effects of the earthquakes.
