A discrete wavenumber and normal-mode superposition method for synthetic seismograms is presented. This method is based on representing the solution of an elastic layered medium in the form of a discrete wavenumber series for the normal modes obtained by the finite-element technique. A rigid basement is added to the bottom of the layered structure to obtain normal modes. Causality arguments are used to define time windows for which the responses are not affected by the rigid basement. A comparison is made between the solutions of the present method and those of the Cagniard de Hoop method, DWFE, by Olson et al. (1984) and the locked mode approximation by Harvey (1981).
