Abstract

Amplification of ground motion in three dimensions due to cylindrical alluvial valleys of arbitrary cross section is investigated in this paper. The incident wave is either a plane SH or Rayleigh wave, propagating at an arbitrary angle to the axis of the valley. A hybrid numerical method combining boundary integral representation and finite element discretization has been employed. Numerical results show significant amplification depending on the angles of incidence and geometries of the valleys.
