Abstract

Seismic radiation from two- and three-dimensional kinematic fault models is computed in the time domain using a representation due to Mura (1963). The analysis appears to be considerably simpler than the usual one based on Caignard-de Hoop methods and affords a fresh insight into the wave generation mechanism. A rectangular fault of finite width generates a spherical passage of rupture phase, of importance near the edges, in addition to those phases already identified in the literature.
