Abstract

A few subcrustal earthquakes located by means of a microearthquake survey in the Wellington region, at the Indian and Pacific plate-boundary, exhibit strong phases between first P and first S arrivals. These phases have been identified as having been converted from S to P (Sp) or P to S (Ps) at the Mohorovičić discontinuities of the Indian and Pacific plates. Examples of these phases are shown here. Two events are selected, and simple models are assumed to draw ray paths of these phases as possible explanations of mode conversion.
