An analysis of near-surface COCORP seismic data provides in situ P-wave velocities for various outcropping Precambrian metasedimentary and metaigneous rocks along reflection lines in the Adirondack Mountains, New York and the Laramie Range, Wyoming. Calculated velocities range from 5.4 to 6.4 km/sec for 12 outcropping lithologies. Significant contrasts exist even between crystalline rocks with similar geologic histories, implying that even simple geologic contacts within crystalline provinces may be imaged in the lower crust.
