A theory is presented for the computation of the statistical properties of the seismicity from a model of the rupture mechanism for a system of faults. This connection is made by way of a family of distributions which represent the likelihood that the system be in a given configuration. The equation for the time evolution of these distributions is given in terms of the rupture model. Transient effects are shown to decay exponentially. Two model problems are solved.
