Abstract

The use of the rule suggested by Rosenblueth in 1968 to combine the modal responses of systems with natural frequencies close to one another is discussed, and a procedure to improve its accuracy is proposed. The validity of the proposed procedure is then assessed by means of a numerical comparative study of solutions obtained by this rule, a step-by-step integration technique, and other commonly used rules. On the basis of this comparative study, it is shown that Rosenblueth's rule, in combination with the suggested procedure, accurately predicts the maximum response of systems with closely spaced natural frequencies.
