abstract

An interactive travel-time free epicenter location procedure is presented. This procedure has the following features: (a) minimum redundancy (each trial solution uses P arrival times from six stations); (b) fast graphic locations under operator control; (c) objective criteria for the rational selection of data as suited to each individual station configuration; (d) the iterative approach allows the operator to develop a feeling for the relative size of individual station errors and for the accuracy of each solution. The epicenters determined by this procedure do not involve a priori assumptions about travel times, and may be used for independent determinations of the internal structure of the Earth. Three examples of teleseismic locations are discussed.
