Leaking modes are little influenced by the presence of a low α layer. The lattice-like structure of the phase-velocity curves occurs for a two-layer model as well as for a six-layer one. The excitation tends to be high where phase-velocity curves cross (or approach) each other. Both normally and inversely dispersed wave trains are predicted; the agreement with the observations varies from fair to good.
