A group of nonpendular seismographs actuated by the phase differences at two points in the earth's crust are analyzed for their transient and their steady-state behavior. The seismographs considered are the Benioff Linear Strain seismograph, the transversely driven rod seismograph suggested by Benioff, terminated rod seismographs of a new type, and a seismograph utilizing optical interference.
