Raschke (2017) criticizes parts of our publication, and earlier publications, on the maximum possible and the maximum expected magnitude at the gas field in Groningen (Zöller and Holschneider, 2016b). In this reply, we show that Raschke’s criticism is based on misinterpretations and fringe opinions.

The criticism in Raschke’s comment can be decomposed into three parts.

  1. Raschke claims that the predictive distribution (PD) is in general “not a useful and stable approach.”

  2. Our earlier criticism of the use of point estimators for mmax is questioned.

  3. Raschke complains that we are providing the 90% confidence interval, when we calculate...
