Abstract

The evaluation of the spatial correlation of ground motions is the first step toward an assessment of the seismic risk on a regional scale. This short study focuses on the evaluation of the spatial correlation of ground motions recorded during intermediate‐depth earthquakes produced in the Vrancea subcrustal seismic source in Romania for eight spectral periods in the 0.0–3.0 s range. A recently developed ground‐motion model is used as reference, and the database consists of around 300 ground motions recorded during eight intermediate‐depth Vrancea earthquakes. An exponential model is fitted on the experimental semivariograms, and the resulting correlation ranges are compared with the values obtained in previous studies.
