A drone image showing extensive damage in Hatay, Türkiye following the February 6, 2023 earthquakes that occurred near Kahramanmaraş, Türkiye. The magnitude 7.8 earthquake and magnitude 7.5 event that followed nine hours later caused massive destruction and loss of life in southeast-central Türkiye, as well as northern Syria. These events, and thousands of smaller aftershocks, occurred within the Eastern Anatolian Fault Zone in a complex rupture sequence involving three plate boundaries. This Focus Section covers many aspects of the earthquake sequence, including seismotectonics, source parameters, ground motions and co-seismic deformation. The Editor-in-Chief would like to thank the guest editors, many of whom were directly involved in the earthquake response, for their hard work in making this focus section a success.
