Data, or at least digital data, are a collection of ones and zeroes. With enough of each (in the right order, of course), sufficient computing capability and a touch of gray matter, we can begin to unravel the secrets of the universe. Seismology has entered an era of big data where repositories have moved beyond terabytes to petabytes. The papers that make up this issue’s focus section on “Big Data Problems in Seismology” touch on many aspects of the topic, including new methodologies, unique data sets and advances in science.
