Hayward, California, is one of the many communities at risk from a major earthquake on the Hayward Fault, one of the most hazardous faults in the San Francisco Bay Area. In this issue, Taira et al. discuss an experiment undertaken in the Berkeley section of the Hayward Fault aimed at an improved understanding of the fault zone structure and its properties by imaging the seismic velocity structure in the upper crust.
