On 4 July 2019, much of California was shaken by a magnitude 6.4 earthquake near Ridgecrest. It was followed on 6 July by a larger, magnitude 7.1 event. The earthquake sequence, consisting of thousands of aftershocks, is ongoing and has proven to be complex with rupture on multiple faults. In this photo, USGS geologists Josie Nevitt and Beth Haddon take measurements of the surface rupture, described in detail by Ponti et al. (this issue). Eighteen additional papers in this issue describe and make available data and derived products collected and assembled in the aftermath of July earthquakes.
