Understandingcontaminant fate and transport processes in the vadose zone and implementing effective characterization and remediation approaches are recognized as some of the most challenging problems facing scientists and engineers dealing with the subsurface environment. The separate section entitled Contaminant Characterization, Transport, and Remediation in Complex Multiphase Systems in this issue of Vadose Zone Journal is dedicated to this topic. Motivation for the special section is derived from two sessions entitled “Characterization, Attenuation, and Remediation of Subsurface Contaminants in Heterogeneous Chemical or Physical Settings” at the Geological Society of America Annual Meeting in Denver, CO (29–30 Oct. 2002).
