I am pleased to learn that James Forbes’ notes from Jameson's lecture course survive at the University of St Andrews and thank John Gordon for bringing their existence to general notice. Cunningham (1990) provides a good summary and the timing of Forbes’ attendance is particularly useful. As a student in the 1827–28 session, he closely followed Charles Darwin who had attended Jameson's course in 1826–27, and so Forbes’ account supports Darwin's autobiographical recollections of Jameson's Neptunist interpretation of Edinburgh's Salisbury Crags sill.
