Fragmental rocks associated with Centre 3 of the Ardnamurchan Central Complex, NW Scotland, have long been interpreted as vent-filling agglomerates of pyroclastic origin (Richey & Thomas 1930). Here, we re-interpret these lithologies as net-veined dolerites formed by the intrusion and cooling of basaltic magma, and fragmented in places by emplacement of a subsequent silicic magma.
