This Memoir marks an interesting departure by the Geological Society into historical geology, yet true to tradition it does provide a definitive and deeply researched account of its subject. It differs in style from other well-received accounts documenting the history of the Highland Controversy and geological research in the Lake District by David Oldroyd. It is probably a more comprehensive research document but does not provide such a coherent and satisfying read as the Oldroyd books.
