Abstract

Much of the terrain occupied by the Devonian-Dinantian (lower Carboniferous) in the southern Vosges mountains of eastern France belongs to the Markstein and Odern complexes. These are separated by a thrust fault whose trace is marked by a line of klippen represented by a string of exotic erosional massifs. The Markstein complex of shales and greywackes is allochthonous Culm (lower Carboniferous) comprising a series of flysch type turbidites. The laminites of the series exhibit the microfigures of sedimentation such as micro-erosion, micro-current ripple-marks, micro-sinking by thixotropy, micro-carpet traction, micro-slumping, microboudinage, and micro-cross lamination. Major sedimentary rhythms are clearly shown.
