Abstract

Triassic to middle Miocene rocks make up the Venetian Prealps sequence in the Barcis region (Udine province, Italy). The thick sediments belong to the eastern border of the Friuli zone. Shallow water limestones deposited from the Liassic through the Dogger were succeeded by reef limestones from the Malm to Cretaceous. The limestones are covered by Eocene flysch. ESE to WNW ripple marks and a later occurrence for the flysch on the west side of the area indicate an eastern source for the flysch deposits. Miocene sediments contain glauconite and littoral fauna. Major tectonics in the area are believed to be post-Miocene.
