Abstract

The interpretation by Heinzelin (1961) of the Mousterian and Perigordian artifacts in the Goderville loess deposits (northern France) is not entirely acceptable. Five major points of difference are discussed. It is probable that two Wuermian stades existed before the upper Paleolithic began (35-40,000 yrs B.P.) rather than one as concluded by Heinzelin.
