Evidence of a Burdigalian (Miocene) phase of folding has been found in Majorca (Balearic islands, Spain); formerly only intra-Oligocene and post-Burdigalian (paroxysmal) phases have been known. The trend of tangential pressures varied widely, even within a given phase. Detailed study of the Alcudia peninsula shows that an east to west pressure was responsible for the Burdigalian folds. Other trends are from southeast to northwest and from southwest to northeast.
