Abstract

Distinguishes four groups in the pre-Carboniferous metamorphic series of the Grandes Rousses massif, Isere, France. Four distinct types can also be distinguished in the pre-Carboniferous granites of the massif. Both the crystalline series and the granites have been subjected to retrograde metamorphism (due to Alpine orogenic activity). The Carboniferous sediments discordantly capping the crystalline complex have also been metamorphosed, so that the transgressive contact is difficult to determine except where basal conglomerates are present.
