Reports the discovery of algal balls (calcareous nodules containing Girvanella sp.) in Bathonian (Jurassic) deposits of the Sarthe region, France. Although algal balls are of no stratigraphic value, they are significant for facies determinations, in that they are diagnostic for extremely shallow-water depositional basins.
