Abstract

Between Basel (Switzerland) and Karlsruhe (Germany) the lower Rhine terrace is composed of interglacial alluvium capped by loess; below Karlsruhe it is composed of fluvioglacial deposits. Slow, gentle crustal movements took place during deposition and modified the morphology and structure of the terrace.
