The papers included in this thematic issue were presented on September 25, 2010, in a specialized session held in Thessaloniki (Greece) within the framework of the 19th Congress of the Carpathian-Balkan Geological Association, which was an international meeting with over 550 participants. The session we convened was dedicated to the contribution that radiolarian biochronology can make to solve stratigraphic and/or tectonic problems. It is now well established that radiolarian biochronology can significantly help to reconstruct the often complex geodynamic, palaeogeographic and palaeoenvironmental evolution of past oceanic realms and their adjacent continental margins.
