Abstract

The Aptian ammonite biozones recognized in the Tunisian distinctive depositional palaeoenvironments are presented, characterized and correlated with the ammonite zonal standard of Mediterranean area [Hoedemaeker et al., 1993]. The successive ammonite assemblages and their large geographic distribution in Aptian and Albian sediments mean the ingression of the Tethys on the northern continental margin of the African Craton. The tectonic events and climatic variations induced the basins and platforms evolution of this transect of the South-Tethyan palaeomargin.
