Ezaki et al. (2003) detailed an unusual earliest Triassic carbonate deposit that formed on top of Permian reefs in the immediate aftermath of the end-Permian extinction. Kershaw et al. (1999, 2002) called the deposit a “?microbialite”. Ezaki et al. (2003) considered it truly microbial and a thrombolite; they provided a valuable description accompanied by excellent illustrations of this rock in the Huaying area of western Sichuan. Their work also addressed deposits studied by Kershaw et al. (1999, 2002), and resampled one of the sites examined by Kershaw et al. (1999), as well as new sites....
