In a recent paper in this journal (September 2003), Larsen and Piotrowski presented new results on the fabric pattern in a basal till from Kurzetnik in Poland. We feel it is necessary to comment on the applied documentation technique and interpretation of fabric data before accepting their conclusions on the reconstruction of subglacial processes. First, it is concluded that the a-axis length has no effect on the fabric strength. This conclusion contrasts to the strong positive coupling between a-axis length and fabric strength identified by Kjær and Krüger (1998) and most recently verified by Carr and Rose (2003)...
