Shanmugam states, "direct observations of turbidity currents in the deep sea . . . have proven to be unsuccessful." Though this may have been true at one time, several recent expeditions have demonstrated otherwise. For instance, Johnson et al. (2001) documented the upper portions of a turbidity current in Monterey Canyon.
