Abstract

A method is described for the collection of unconsolidated salt-marsh sediment resulting in no compaction and minimal disturbance to the sample. The monolith sampler consists of an acrylic casing of optional length, with a wide, flat base and short right-angled sides that is inserted into a cleaned vertical face. Use of this inexpensive technique allows observation of any structures present through the sediment record and provides sufficient material for various high-resolution geochemical and sedimentological analyses.
