The idea that carbonate mineral precipitation, by preferentially removing 18 O, can cause isotopic depletion in pore waters and subsequently precipitating minerals has been in the literature for 20 years (Irwin et al. 1977). A numerical model of the process shows that for calcite and dolomite precipitation such a mechanism is not viable for reasonable rates of precipitation. Siderite precipitation in marine environments is also not likely to be able to occur rapidly enough to deplete pore waters in 18 O.
