The formation of mud laminites was studied in flume experiments with fine-grained suspensions of varying sediment concentration and type. A transition from lamina formation to uniform deposition was observed at a concentration of about 1.9 kg m (super -3) . Laminae formed during continuous deposition showed gradual contacts, whereas breaks in deposition were marked by sharp contacts. Gradual contacts between laminae deposited from suspensions of concentration less than about 1.9 kg m-3 were more distinct than those separating laminae deposited from denser suspensions.
