Abstract

Upper Miocene and Lower Pliocene coal-bearing deposits within the Kleszczow Graben of central Poland are entirely of alluvial origin. A series of cyclic sequences between 3-10 m thick and containing thick, sheet sands and overlying fines and coal appear to have been deposited by mixed-load, meandering streams. They also indicate a decreasing rate of subsidence of the sedimentary basin and relatively slow accumulation rates. The alluvial architecture of sediments has been observed to be changeable within the graben, in some places being sand-dominated and in others mud-dominated. These lithological changes are interpreted in relation to tectonic activity affecting the bedrock.
