Organic carbon and sulfur contents of 900 sediment samples from the Virginia portion of Chesapeake Bay average 1.0 percent and 0.35 percent, respectively. The concentrations are closely related to the weight percent clay in the sediment, which in turn appears to be a function of depth and wave or current energy. Additionally there is a close relationship between the organic carbon and sulfur contents, a result of the limiting-role played by organic matter in the bacterial reduction of sulfate.--Modified journal abstract.
