Abstract

Many publications based on analyses of Recent sediments are providing the reader with too little essential information on sampling procedures. Workers may be paying insufficient attention to fundamental sampling principles and the limitations they inherently impose on the conclusions reached. Only the textural characteristics of the uppermost "active" layer, which may be a few millimeters or centimeters thick, are likely to directly reflect contemporaneous environmental processes.
