Abstract

Heavy and light mineral analyses of sediment from the continental shelf off Guinea Bissau, Guinea and Sierra Leone indicate that an anomalous northwestward migration of sediment is taking place under the southeastward flowing surface waters of the Canary Current in a longshelf zone bounded, approximately, by the 40 m and 80 m isobaths. Stepwise integration of the velocity shear, obtained through application of the thermal wind equation to the thermal structure of the supernatant water, revealed the presence of a northwesterly flowing current beneath the Canary Current. That current, here named the Canary Counter Current, is the logical agent of transport for the migrating sediment.
