Abstract
A new water sampler for determining short period suspended sediment fluctuations in the surf zone has been designed in which simultaneous serial samples are collected in a vertical line above the bed. The hand-operated device consists of a mounting pole, bottle support brackets and Van Dorn-type bottles closed by hinged doors. Closely spaced samples can be collected at precise distances above the bed, as low as 10 cm. Relatively rapid flushing time of the bottles and fast response time of the apparatus allows detection of short period changes in suspended sediment concentration. The apparatus has been used successfully in breaking waves up to 150 cm high, under all conditions typical to the South Carolina coast.
