Abstract

Ultra-thin thin sections (2-12 microns thick) have several advantages over standard petrographic sections (30 microns thick) in carbonate petrology. First, the fabric of fine grain carbonate is more clearly delineated. Secondly. elongate grains can be identified as being either length-slow or length-fast. In addition these thin sections, having a very smooth surface, may be studied without a cover glass and they can be analyzed with a microprobe. The ultra-thin character is obtained by final polishing, which allows slower and more controlled removal of material.
