Abstract

Heavy minerals and size distribution of bottom sediments and reef materials have been examined in a Sabellariidae reef at Seminole Shores, Florida, approximately 100 miles northeast of Miami. Heavy mineral and shell fragment percentages in the reef material are up to ten times greater than in the adjacent bottom sediments. This distribution results from the tendency of the worm Phragmatopoma lapidosa to utilize the finer mineral grain sizes and platy shell fragments in tube construction. Accordingly, these worms improve the sorting of the beach sediments to a significant degree.
