Abstract

Various coring techniques can be used to recover not only bottom sediment but also a sample of bottom water and the interstitial water below the water/sediment interface. Commercially available plugs inserted at the top of the core liner tube create a tight seal. From such sealed cores segments can be cut off one at a time from the bottom. Within each is a sample of undisturbed interstitial water, which can be recovered in a pressure-type squeezing vessel.
