Abstract

Analysis of textural parameters (mean diameter, standard deviation, skewness, kurtosis) calculated from a total of 120 samples of modern beach, coastal dune, inland dune, and river sands demonstrates that several combinations of parameters are environmentally sensitive. Parameters calculated from quarter phi sieve data are the most sensitive, but in some cases, half or whole phi parameters differentiate as effectively. The combination of mean diameter vs. skewness is most effective in differentiating between beach and inland dune sands and coastal dune sands; the combination of mean diameter vs. standard deviation is most effective in differentiating between beach and river sands and river and coastal dune sands. Skewness vs. kurtosis is useful only in certain cases and only with quarter phi data. It is, however, never the most effective combination of parameters.
