Contrary to the implications in the paper being discussed (ibid., v. 36, p. 841-843, 1966), the size difference, in phi units, between the same grain population measured on a grain mount and measured in thin section is theoretically constant for populations of different mean size. Variation due to Type I, II, and III errors affects the results. An insufficient number of grains were measured.
