A Cambrian bentonite from Missouri comprised of dioctahedral, mixed-layer illite-montmorillonite is quite similar to K-bentonites described in the literature. Chemical analysis indicates that transformation involved substitution of Al (super 3+) for Si (super 4+) in the tetrahedral layer as well as addition of K (super +) in the interlayer position.
