When studying regional geochemical variation of elements from drill cuttings, sampling error is at a minimum for elements that occur in the principal mineral component of the rocks. Data on strontium and magnesium in the Slave Point Formation, which consists of carbonate rocks, are more reliable indicators of facies changes than aluminum, silicon, iron, and titanium that occur chiefly in admixed detrital minerals. Elements in secondary minerals such as barite or sphalerite are not reliable indicators.
