Abstract
Direct algebraic determination of arithmetic means inherent in two-dimensional orientation data is demonstrated. Such means may be manipulated statistically in the same manner as the means of linear data. Means of circular data determined by a vector method are less sensitive to extreme values than arithmetic means. To avoid loss of geologically significant information, the computation of both means is recommended.
